On Saturday, October 27th the fall 2018 session of Philadelphia Areas Girls Enjoying Science™ (PAGES™) was held at Chestnut Hill College. The event brought together 94 girls from 24 schools with 49 volunteers for a day of science fun. Many thanks to Mary Auker, Shyla Jagannatha, Eva Miller, Kathy Quinn, and Kate Sweeney for being chaperones.
Randara Pulukkody, a chemist with the Dow Chemical Company, was a fabulous keynote speaker. Randara talked of her childhood love for science in Shri Lanka and following this love of science to the United States.
It is inspiring to see so many women giving up their Saturday to be chaperones and perform experiments with the girls. I always enjoy meeting new volunteers and catching up with program veterans. This spring’s experiments included density, buoyancy, conductive polymers, liquid nitrogen ice cream, strawberry DNA extraction, lip balm, clouds, shaving cream printing, and polymers from milk.
The next session of PAGES™ will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Chestnut Hill College. Volunteers are needed to be chaperones for the girls and to conduct experiments with the girls. Look for more details in September. Check out our web site. You may even find a picture of someone you know. There are some great photos from the previous sessions.
